sounds like a work around.. but, the dizzy doesn't look too old or beat up. Can't I just adjust it using a timing light to get back to TDC?

doesn't matter if it 'looks' beat up, the internals of it are what's important.
My guess, I'd agree with numbnuts and start working on making sure your dizzy and all the sensors related to it are good...
that being said, just line up the marks on the block and crank pulley and see where your cam mark ends up... if you're out of timing by a little bit, you can tell pretty easily...
