how do you have a street legal skyline in the us then?
Initially MotoRex had to petition the NHTSA to become a Registered Importer (RI). In order to be an RI on needs to have a facility that will ensure the cars won't come in contact with the general public (high barbed wire fences, a shop to preform compliances, etc). MotoRex then had to be bonded for each individual car and also was required to produce a video, pictures, and paperwork documenting what was required to bring cars into compliance.
MotoRex then had a R33 Skyline GTS-t crashed by a third party firm to determine what met US crash regulations and what didn't. MotoRex then took this proprietary information and engineered compliance package for the NHTSA.
In regards to other aspects of the compliance package (lighting, emissions, gauges etc) some items required zero or minimal work to be brought into into US compliance (seats, interior and exterior lighting come to mind).
Other aspects required a lot of work to be brought into compliance. Speedometer and odometer that display MPH and miles traveled in US units, OBD1-OBD2 compliance, and saftey equipment come to mind.
Keep in mind that this process can take months and even up to years as one would have to work through the bueraucracy of several federal government and state agencies (NHTSA, DOT, EPA, Customs, CARB, etc.)
The ONLY way to legally avoid all of the afore mentioned "riggermarole" would be to obtain a letter from the manufacture of the car stating that the JDM car meets US standards. As you can imagine, in our sue happy society auto manufactures are a little more than apprehensive to supply statements of liability to the general public.
That's why private individuals CAN'T make a legal Skyline or any other JDM car legal. That's why all of these grey market (more like black market) JDM cars are illegal and more likely than not stolen from their country of origin. How do I know all of this? I'm a member of a board where Shawn Morris the guy who was originally responsible for bringing Skylines into the US is a moderator.
To the original poster, you are breaking federal law by trying to sell an illegal car. You could be fined or imprisoned for your actions. You might never get caught but be aware of what you are doing.
To prospective buyers, BEWARE. Unless you plan to purchase the car for parts I wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft pole. If you get caught operating the car on US roads, it can be seized, deported to it's country of origin, or destroyed. You could be warned, fined, or imprisoned depending upon circumstances.
Keep in mind that since the car is illegal it should NOT command a premium price. You are almost always beter off purchasing a USDM CRX shell and purchasing the parts seperately.
Sorry to cock block but I don't want to see honest board members scamed by less than honest people.
