well I'd say you can rule out the alternator if it doesn't crank over.  Otherwise do the usual and check for spark everywhere and you can usually hear if the starter is bad, actually I'm not sure the car will crank if your starter is bad.

yeah, the car's definitely not gonna crank if the starter's bad... go for the basics first...check for spark and check for fuel.

I am actually starting to become pretty sure its the frickin timing belt.  What sucks is the car is in a crowded parking lot.  I just wish it was in my driveway or something.  I will go up there, hopefully today, and check for spark.  I am pretty sure it has spark.  Since it died I think it could be the alternator or the dist, possibly coil.

If you think its the timing belt, dont even think about cranking it over (attempting to) or say goodbye to the head.....

I seriously think it's ignition or fuel though.....

Sounds like what is happening to my brothers VW... so if you figure it out Tell me.

Try testing your fuel pressure with a gauge?
That and test the coil packs.
Past that I think your fucked, give it to me, I will out it with the rest of my non-running cars.

OH yea, No shit who would be stupid enough to think that if the starter was bad it would still turn the motor over.

the easy way I guess would be to see if fuel is getting to the injectors or the fuel rail...  and how good of preasure there is if it is...

First thing I'm MAKE SURE OF.... (just for sanity's sake) is that the timing belt is OK. Just pop the valve cover off and check the bitch.... if it's ok, then try to get her goin again...

Does it smell like gas when you try cranking it over? If so, you have an ignition problem (which is why my car died on me last month).

Do you have a fuel pressure Adapter on your fuel Rail??? It looks kinda like a Valve stem on your fuel rail... if so uncover it and just turn your car on and play like your flatening someones tires... Just keep your head back  if the shit squirts hard and strong: it has fuel.  I dont think it would be fuel injectors because doesnt it have 4?  1 could be bad but all 4??

ok here is my take. when my dizzy locked up it turned over like it was going to crank but didn't. turns out the bearing went bad on the shaft and the thing couldn't turn. so i am voting for that. check that out, just take your dizzy off and check it

it could be all of these things and many more...to narrow it down...check for fuel and spark first
