Okay, this should work with other gauge brands but this mine was an Autometer.
Here's what you'll need:
Water Temperature Gauge
Water Temperature Sender (Supplies with autometer)
Wires
12mm Socket/Wrench
10mm Socket/Wrench
Wire Cutters or Crimps
Wire Connectors (The kind with a hole to slide over bolts/pegs)
Okay, first off. Be VERY careful not to loose any of the little nuts that hold in the wires and ESPECIALLY careful not to loose the two nuts on the end of the sender.
Installing the Sender (The Hard Part)
1. Take off the distributor by removing the three bolts in the triangular bracket with the 12mm wrench
2. Slide it off and put it in a position where it won't get in the way
3. Underneath where the distributor was and on the side of the car closest to the firewall, tere will be a single wire going into the car. If you remove the plastic/rubber coating of this wire near the end where it plugs in under the distributor it's going to be
yellow/green
and should only be
one
wire. Cut off the rubber and plastic insulators near the end of the wire to reveal the stock sender. Now cut the wire near the sender.
4. Remove the stock sender by sticking using extended 12mm socket and ratchet. Wrenches won't fit in there unless you wanna remove some of the radiator lines.
5. With the stock sender out, bolt in the new one in the same place.
6. Now this part is very important, when you attach a wire to the sender, make sure it is BETWEEN the two nuts and not touching against the middle of the sender and being held in with only one nut. That's why you need two. Make sure the wire is at the end of the sender. If it touches the actually sender on the other end it will ground out the gauge and not work correctly, so just make sure it's being held between two nuts and the inner nut is not touching the middle.
6. Replace the distributor, make sure everything lines up when you put it back in.
7. Run the wire through the firewall to your desired location.
Installing the Gauge (The Easy Part)
1. Decide where you want your gauge, I put mine in an autometer gauge pod attached to the A-Pillar.
2. Run the following wires to where you want the gauge:
- The Sender Wire
- A ground wire
- A power source wire (Mine was the ignition)
3. If your gauge has a light, you can wire it up anyway you want (Normally people will wire it so the light comes on when you turn your lights on). HOWEVER, If you don't want to run many extra wires just run the power wire to the peg on the gauge where the 12v power will go and the ground to the other peg, so it will turn on when the power is on with the gauge.
4. Connect the wires. MAKE SURE THE POWER WIRE DOES NOT TOUCH THE SENDER WIRE. This is very important, because in some cases the sender can be permanently damaged.
5. Slide your gauge into the pod or attach it however you want.
All done.
