I know there are a couple units out now that play MP3s. I've seen them by Aiwa (2 different ones), Kenwood, and Sony.

I bought the first Aiwa one last year. I paid 跌 at the time, but it's gone down in price since then. When I bought it I knew it wasn't that great, but it was the only one that I could find anywhere at the time and I really, really wanted one. I'm happy with it except for two things:

1. It is so ugly. When I change the volume the blue neon lights flash on the console. Ummm...why?!?

2. The darn thing skips. Not a lot, but more than any of the current CD players do. The skipping occurs not only when playing MP3's, but when playing regular "old-fashioned" CD's as well. The player skips on occassion for just about everyone I have talked to.

So if I were you (or your friend this was for, right?) I would look into the Kenwood model and make sure it doesn't skip. Buy one from a place like Best Buy that lets you return it in 30 days if you're unhappy.
