Uneducated New Driver - oil change

im an idiot i swear!

i finally booked an oil change for tuesday (the 24th) for i think the first time. yeah thats right the FIRST time since i got my car!

when i bought the car i hadn't asked when the last oil change was done and there was no sticker to say... so i just kinda didn't think much of it... and my car sat most of the winter (from nov. - feb.) and i am really uneducated in the issure of changing oil and filling up the oil etc.
for example i still really don't know what oil my car takes (i know its not synthetic and i think its 10w30) and i don't check my oil regularily enough.
also i am forgetful and busy, and not to mention lazy...

scary story, a month or so ago i was driving and i seen a red light come on when i took a corner but i thought maybe it was just the ebrake warning light or some shiznit like that but i found out later that it was my oil light :( whoops.

i hope i didnt do too much damage or lessen the life of the engine too much!

but i think after this oil change i will get into the routine and know when i have to take it in again.

how ofter does everyone else on this board check the oil on their rexes???

Well, I check my oil about twice a week because my fuckin rings are gone. I add 1 quart of synthetic about once a month casue I am burning oil. And do a complete change every 3000 miles.

i check my oil once every 3 times i fill up with gas...

i ALWAYS check it before i drivre a long trip, like when i commute from PA to NY

and whenever it looks low, i usually change it instead of filling it up.

i never let it go more than 5000 miles with synthetic, or 3000 miles with regular oil


choosing 10w30 and 5w30 really depends on the weather conditions..

ha ha!! you think that's bad??? i "used" to check my oil every goddamn day... before i could start the car up... fucking ls/vtec fast car tho :)....
